Starting position

Set a loaded barbell on rack pins or safeties at mid-thigh height and grip it double-overhand at shoulder width.

  1. 1

Brace and stand up with the bar so it rests against the thighs.

  2. 2

Squeeze the bar as hard as possible with arms straight.

  3. 3

    Hold for the target time.

  4. 4

Return the bar to the pins under control.

Breathing: Breathe steadily behind a braced core.

Coaching tips

  • Double overhand, no straps

  • Shoulders back

  • Squeeze the bar

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the shoulders forward

  • Using straps or hooks

  • Dropping the bar

Safety notes

  • Set the pins high so you only lift a short distance and can return the bar safely.
