How to perform

Close-Grip Incline Push-Up movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand facing a racked Smith machine bar or a sturdy ledge, place the hands next to each other on it and walk the feet back until the body is straight and the arms are locked.

  1. 1

Brace so the body stays in one line from head to heels.

  2. 2

Bend the elbows, keeping them close to the sides, and lower the chest to the bar.

  3. 3

    Touch the bar lightly.

  4. 4

    Press back to straight arms.

Breathing: Inhale as you lower, exhale as you press.

Coaching tips

  • Elbows skim the ribs

  • Chest to the bar

  • Lower the bar to make it harder

Common mistakes

  • Hips sagging

  • Elbows flaring out

  • Short reps that stop before the chest reaches the bar

Safety notes

  • Lock the Smith bar in place, or use a surface that cannot slide or tip.
