How to perform

Side-Lying Dumbbell External Rotation movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Lie on your side on a flat bench or the floor, head resting on your lower arm, holding a light dumbbell in the top hand with the elbow bent 90 degrees and tucked against your side, forearm across your stomach.

  1. 1

Keep the upper arm against your side; a rolled towel under the elbow helps.

  2. 2

Rotate the forearm up, lifting the dumbbell in an arc away from your stomach.

  3. 3

Stop when the forearm points toward the ceiling or the elbow starts to move.

  4. 4

Lower slowly to the start, then switch sides.

Breathing: Exhale as you rotate up, inhale as you lower.

Coaching tips

  • Slow and controlled

Common mistakes

  • Letting the elbow lift off your side
