How to perform

Barbell Front Rack Carry movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Unrack a barbell from a squat rack onto the front of the shoulders with elbows high, as in a front squat.

  1. 1

Step back from the rack and stand tall with elbows up.

  2. 2

Brace the core and walk forward with short steps.

  3. 3

Keep the chest up so the bar stays on the shoulders.

  4. 4

Walk the distance, turn carefully if needed, and return the bar to the rack.

Breathing: Breathe behind a braced trunk with short breaths rather than holding the breath.

Coaching tips

  • Elbows high

  • Chest proud

  • Small steps

Common mistakes

  • Elbows dropping so the bar rolls forward

  • Rounding the upper back

  • Overly long strides

  • Walking too far from the rack

Safety notes

  • Set safety arms or walk a short route near the rack.

  • Use bumper plates and push the bar forward to drop it if needed.
