Barbell Side Bend
A standing side bend with a light barbell across the upper back, bending to alternate sides. The load sits on both shoulders, so the obliques work through lateral flexion without the lopsided pull of a single dumbbell.

How to perform
Main muscles working (thicker lines)
Starting position
Stand tall with feet shoulder-width apart and a light barbell resting across your upper back, hands gripping it just outside your shoulders.
Brace your abs and squeeze your glutes so your hips stay level.
Bend straight to one side at the waist, letting the bar tilt with your shoulders.
Stop when you feel a strong stretch along the opposite side, then pull yourself back upright.
Bend to the other side and keep alternating.
Breathing: Inhale as you bend to the side, exhale as you return upright.
Coaching tips
Bend sideways, not forward
Hips stay still
Slow and controlled
Common mistakes
Leaning forward or twisting the torso
Shifting the hips sideways instead of bending at the waist
Loading the bar heavily and bouncing out of the bottom
Safety notes
Keep the bar light and the range pain-free; this is not a lift to load heavily.
