How to perform

Incline Treadmill Walk movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Stand on the treadmill with the safety clip attached, starting at a flat, slow walk.

  1. 1

Walk flat for a few minutes to warm up.

  2. 2

Raise the incline gradually to a challenging level, commonly 8-15%.

  3. 3

Set a brisk but controlled walking speed.

  4. 4

Walk tall with a slight forward lean from the ankles, swinging your arms naturally.

  5. 5

Lower the incline and speed gradually to cool down.

Breathing: Breathe steadily; you should be working but still able to speak in short phrases.

Coaching tips

  • Let go of the rails

  • Push through the whole foot

  • Stay tall

Common mistakes

  • Hanging on to the handrails, which removes most of the work

  • Leaning far forward from the waist

  • Setting the incline too high too soon

Safety notes

  • Increase incline gradually if you have calf or Achilles sensitivity.

  • Attach the emergency stop clip.
