How to perform

Low-to-High Cable Woodchop movement

Main muscles working (thicker lines)

Starting position

Set a cable pulley low, stand side-on in a slight squat and hold the handle with both hands outside your near knee.

  1. 1

Brace your abs and keep your arms nearly straight.

  2. 2

Drive up through your legs and rotate your torso to pull the handle diagonally across your body.

  3. 3

Finish with hands above the opposite shoulder, pivoting the back foot.

  4. 4

Return slowly to the start and repeat, then switch sides.

Breathing: Exhale as you lift across, inhale as you return.

Coaching tips

  • Legs and hips start it

  • Rotate, don't lean back

  • Smooth return

Common mistakes

  • Arching the lower back at the top

  • Lifting with the arms only

  • Jerking the weight

Safety notes

  • Pivot the back foot so the rotation doesn't twist the knee.
