How to perform
Main muscles working (thicker lines)
Starting position
Stand with the bar on the upper back as for a back squat, holding it with a snatch-width grip, feet at hip width.
Brace and make a short dip with the legs.
Drive the bar up slightly off the back.
Push yourself down under the bar into a full overhead squat, moving the feet to squat stance.
Lock the arms as you land and stabilise in the bottom.
Stand up with the bar overhead, then return it to the back or the rack.
Breathing: Brace before the dip and hold through the catch; exhale after standing.
Coaching tips
Push yourself down, not the bar up
Lock out fast
Sit straight down
Common mistakes
Pressing the bar out slowly
Landing with the bar behind or in front
Not reaching full depth
Rushing load before speed
Safety notes
Perform from a rack with safety pins or on a platform with bumpers.
Coaching and a solid overhead squat are recommended first.
