Habits

Why we count weeks, not days

Daily streaks punish rest days and break on a fever. Weekly goals match how strength is actually built.

Most fitness apps borrowed the daily streak from language apps: do something every day, or lose the number. For a workout routine that is the wrong unit. Muscles grow on the days you don't train, and a programme that asks for seven sessions a week is a programme most people quit.

Habits form slowly, and a missed day doesn't undo them

The most cited study on habit formation followed 96 people building a new daily behaviour. The median time for it to feel automatic was 66 days, with a range from 18 to 254. Just as useful was what didn't matter: missing a single opportunity did not materially change how the habit formed. Consistency over weeks mattered; perfection on a given day didn't.

A daily streak gets that backwards. It treats a rest day, a wedding or a fever as failure, and the reset to zero is exactly the moment people stop.

A week is the unit training is planned in

Programmes are written as weeks: an upper/lower split four days a week, a full-body routine three days a week. The WHO recommends muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days a week for adults, alongside 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity. None of that is daily.

So in Healthy Hueman your goal is the number of training days in your plan, and your streak counts the weeks in a row you hit it. Three planned days and three done keeps the streak. The other four days can be rest, a walk, or life.

What this changes in practice

  • A bad Tuesday doesn't cost you anything if you train Thursday and Saturday.
  • Rest days stop feeling like cheating, because they're part of the plan.
  • The number on your screen reflects months of consistency, not a lucky run of days.
  • Coaches see adherence per week, which is how they plan your next block anyway.

Set your plan to the number of days you can actually keep, not the number you wish you could. Three honest days beat five aspirational ones.

Showing up is the whole sport. We just count it the way it actually happens.
